I sadly agree with your line, “… I suppose he’ll never be considered as a master, just because of his subject matter.” (Same can be said for other artistic greats like N.C. Wyeth, Boris, Giger, etc.)

What’s sad is that WHY should the subject matter have anything to do with it? Michelangelo painted muscular men (and women) fighting, as did Rubens, Bronzino and many others. The Mannerists, Baroque and Pre-Raphaelites painted figures of fantasy and myth. And even more have painted nudes that were considered sexy at the time. It’s a shame that so many stuck-up museums just don’t understand that the greatness of a painter is in his skill and passion and achievements, not the subjects painted.
