I have seen both Peter Caras and Mitchell Hooks listed as the artist for “The Great gold Steal”. My first guess was Caras, due to the “shadow into background” effect on Cap’s right arm, a technique Caras used in “The Avenger” series as well as many other covers. The sketchiness of the rendering leans more towards Hooks, but you weaken your case with that “those great ’60s John Carter of Mars covers ” reference. Ballantine’s Mars books had covers in the 60’s by Robert Abbett, followed by Gino D’achille in the 70’s and Michael Whelan in the 80s. I don’t believe Mitchell Hooks ever did the series.

Thor is also mentioned, with his absence explained by his being back in Asgard.
