I definitely agree, Smith’s early work was highly Kirby derivative, but oh did he develop his talent quickly after taking on the Conan comic and the two years he worked on it! I love both his styles, though some really hate his early Kirby inspired work on The Avengers and on the X-Men!

The Avengers definitely had a lot of “living room” battles! And I always love hearing someone’s else’s story of how they picked up a certain issue of a book. Those stories seem to stick with us throughout the ages, eh?

Believe it or not, this was the first back issue I ever ordered by mail, from Collector King or Robert Bell or one of the other mail order retailers that advertised in comics back in the late 70s. Those catalogs would absolutely make this then-young collector salivate . . .

I always thought that it looked like the Avengers were fighting Goliath on this cover, though!

Also, ever notice how the Avengers have had a lot of great battles in living rooms? I think back to this cover, as well as issue #154, where they fought Tyrak in the living room of the mansion, as well as #177, in the posh Forest Hills living room of “Michael”, aka Korvac. It would be a great collection of stories for a TPB. Perhaps it could be subtitled “Better Leave the Plastic on the Couch: The Greatest Avengers Living Room Battles!”
