Whether you're adding decor to your home, customizing a man cave, or sprucing up the concrete of a dorm, movie posters have long been a way to show your appreciation for your favorite movie, band, character, etc. And while reprints abound, for the many, an original print is the not only decor but an investment as well. This week's auction boasts a number of original and collectible posters from movies to music, perfect for seasoned collectors or those just starting.
Humble Beginnings
Posters were originally a bright and colorful way to advertise, entice, and ultimately draw in an audience. Posters and lobby cards, in particular, were printed with the specific intention of luring in audiences. These types of posters/advertisements were often printed in limited quantity and very specifically for that event. As such, these have become collectible works of art and increased in value.
Yay or Nay?
While subject matter will always play a part, like most collectibles, condition also factors in. Paper is temporary by nature, and will degrade over time if not taken care of or protected. A mint condition poster is somewhat ware. So what should you look for? Folds, surface or edge wear, pinholes, faded colors, are all things that might lower that value of your poster. Perhaps most importantly, look at the paper size and material. Modern reprints, reissues, and reproductions tend to be printed on modern glossy stock. Older reproductions and reprints were printed on flat stock and may appear more like the originals. The key thing to look for is size. While most reproductions were printed 24x36, most original posters and promos were 27x41 or even larger.
Show Me the Money!
So what can a vintage poster bring in? Turns out quite a lot! In 2017, an original 1931 Dracula poster went to auction for over $500,000. The rare and sought after one sheet is the only lithograph poster in a “style-A” format to ever be auctioned off. Vintage sci-fi and horror films are extremely popular. People love a monster, so even if the movie didn't perform well, if it's monsters, people will buy. Other genres can be popular as well. If you can combine several genres, for that rare movie or concert, all the better. Not every poster will be a $500,000 sale, you can definitely get into the game for under $100. Keep your eye out for original lithographs that were made for display and promotion.
