It is once again Valentine’s Day, the day when millions of people the world over celebrate love! Back to the Past is celebrating by highlighting a few of the best superhero romances in all of comic bookdom. Did your one-true-pairing make the list? Only one way to find out…
Cyclops and Jean Grey
It was love at first sight for Scott “Cyclops” Summers and Jean Grey, though it took them a while to realize it. The pair first posed as a couple in Uncanny X-Men #48 before deciding it was real in Uncanny X-Men #60. They’ve been together ever since…mostly. See, the extra soap opera-y nature of the X-Men has kept them apart a lot. First Jean was dead, then she came back while Cyclops was married to her clone, then they got married, then he was dead, then they were reunited, then she was dead (again), etc. But they’re together right now, and they keep finding their way back to each other through it all!

Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn
Pop Quiz: when was #HarlIvy first teased? It was in 1993’s “Harley And Ivy” episode of Batman: The Animated Series, written by Harley’s co-creator Paul Dini himself! Being a children’s show in the mid-90s, hinting was all he could get away with there. Even so, every Harley/Ivy story he wrote – both on the screen and on the comics page – put out a vibe that fans absolutely picked up on. In the 2010s, changing times allowed new creators the chance to make the relationship official. Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy have been a fan-favorite batfam couple ever since, right up there with the likes Batman & Catwoman or Robin & Batgirl. In recent years, their romance has even been the centerpiece of the Harley Quinn animated series on Max!

Tommy Oliver and Kat Hillard
By the third season of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, Tommy Oliver had graduated to leading the team as the White Ranger with his main squeeze, Pink Ranger Kim Hart, serving as his de-facto second-in-command. At least until she left the team and was replaced by ex-brainwashed baddy Kat Hillard! Tommy and Kat stuck with the team through a costume change and a “Dear John” letter from Kim, ultimately becoming the team’s new power couple. A yuletide flashforward showed them as happily married grandparents and recent anniversary specials like “Dimensions in Danger” and Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: Once & Always have kept the show’s loose continuity building toward that. And in the graphic novel Soul of The Dragon, they happily retire as their son J.J. Oliver takes up the Power Ranger mantle. Many fans prefer Tommy with Kim, but #TomKat is here to stay!

Spider-Man and Mary Jane Watson-Parker
Peter “Spider-Man” Parker and his wife Mary Jane Watson are one of the most beloved couples in comics…which makes it all the more maddening that they’re not together! Their relationship developed over the course of 250 issues before they got married, sticking by one another through ups and downs both in costume and out. Their marriage was a strong one in spite of many difficulties, with MJ sticking by Peter as he went through the Clone Saga, The Other, Civil War, and more! Then, poor editorial choices saw their marriage sold to the devil and banished from continuity. And yet, multiversal titles like Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows (where they fight crime alongside their daughter), Spider-Man: Life Story, and the latest iteration of Ultimate Spider-Man keep bringing them back together, much to the delight of fans.

Superman and Lois Lane
Across the whole of comics history and the multiverse of worlds it contains, no couple has stood the test of time like Clark “Superman” Kent and Lois Lane! The history of the DC Universe has been rewritten at least three times since they first met, and they’ve stuck together through it all. Lois’ take-no-prisoners attitude compliments Clark’s aw-shucks kindness and Lois rarely NEEDS Superman to save her – but it certainly makes life easier. They’ve built a sizable family of young superheroes, chief among them their son Jon Kent AKA Superman II. Their love has been the centerpiece of movies and TV shows like Superman: The Movie, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Smallville, Superman Returns, Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Superman & Lois, and most recently My Adventures with Superman. In the world of superhero comics, Lois and Clark really are #RelationshipGoals.
