JJ here, Back to the Past Pop Culture TV, and The Avengers movie is finally upon us. All month long, we’ve been talking here at Back to the Past about individual members of the team, and now they’ve finally come together in this film that so many of us have been anticipating for a very long time.
A lot of my non-comics friends who have seen the trailer have expressed excitement about the movie, in large part because it brings together a lot of the characters they’ve already seen in Marvel films. And in Hollywood, such convergence is a pretty rare thing, if not completely unheard of. To mainstream audiences, this is not unlike seeing Rambo team up with The Terminator, or Jason Bourne meeting James Bond. Movie fans often ponder such mashups, but they’ve only been able to experience them in their imaginations.
Until now. The Avengers, the film, is doing exactly for Marvel movies what The Avengers, the comic book, did for Marvel Comics nearly fifty years ago: it’s bringing multiple heroes together in an actual story that audiences can experience, rather than only imagine. And it’s generating a level of excitement that hasn’t been seen for a film in a long time.
In other words, now everyone is feeling the same kind of excitement that comic fans did whenever they first discovered The Avengers. And as a comic fan, it’s a thrill to see people who have never read comics nonetheless discover the same kind of enthusiasm that comic fans have. Maybe now, “civilians” everywhere can get a taste of what it’s like to be a fan of comic books.
There has never been a better time to be a fan of The Avengers. Not just because the movie is finally here, but because those of us who have already discovered The Avengers get to feel that kind of excitement all over again. There’s not much in this world, pop culture or otherwise, that has ever succeeded in making me feel like a kid again, but the anticipation over this film has done just that. I’m off to the movies, kids. This is JJ, and I feel like I’ve gone Back . . . to the Past. Seeya.
Avengers…Assemble!
The Avengers movie was awesome! You definitely should see this movie!
