JJ here, Back to the Past Pop Culture TV, and this week I’m going to talk about some of The Avengers that you might not know about. The upcoming Avengers movie features the characters of Hawkeye and The Black Widow, who we’ve seen onscreen before, but not in their own films. Their onscreen history kind of parallels their publishing history, as they both joined the team in the comics without ever having their own titles. Now, in my column this week, I already did tell you just why Hawkeye and the Black Widow qualify to be called some of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. So right now, I will show you some other characters who have history with The Avengers, and why it would be awesome to have them in the next Avengers movie, should we be lucky enough to get one.
The first is Janet Van Dyne, The Wasp. For those who don’t know, she can shrink down to the size of, yes, a wasp, and carries a nasty set of stingers. There wasn’t an Avengers fanboy alive in the 60s and 70s who didn’t have a four color crush on this character. The onscreen version of the team could use another woman, and since in the comics she’s currently suffering from a slight case of death, an appearance in the movie would undoubtedly inspire Marvel to find a way to bring her back. And the character’s been known to have a fling with Tony Stark in the past, so the only sparks in the movie wouldn’t have to come from her stingers.
Second: Hank Pym, as Giant-Man. Also Janet Van Dyne’s husband for a time, so this would add even more drama. Pym, as everyone knows, was the creator of one of the Avengers’ most notorious longtime foes, the indestructible robot Ultron, who would be a great villain in a future film. Pym also has a history of being a little mentally unbalanced due to effects from his size changing powers, so this could also be a great story device. And, bringing him and Janet into movie continuity would give representation to all five of the comic’s charter members. Avengers fans could then die happy.
And lastly, and the coolest Avenger of all time: The Vision. The synthetic android who functions like a human and who shows a touch of emotion from time to time is the favorite of many a longtime Avengers fan, including me. He can alter his density and make himself as light as the air, or as heavy as lead. How cool would it be to see him pull his signature move; sticking his hand through a bad guy; onscreen? And keep in mind that he was created by Ultron, who, as mentioned, was in turn created by Hank Pym, so his origin could almost be a story unto itself. And he’s just too cool looking a character to NOT see on the big screen.
So, there is no shortage of great characters and fan favorites that have appeared in The Avengers over the years. So let’s hear it from you, Avengers fans. Who would you like to see in a sequel? Let us know, but be warned: first one to say Doctor Druid, Rage, or Moondragon gets their Avengers ID card revoked. JJ, Back to the Past Pop Culture TV.
What the heck is wrong with Moondrag -er, that bald Avenger lady?
As for Avengers I’d like to see onscreen, Black Knight hands down is the one I most want to see, but I think he’d come across a little too hokey for these films.
So let’s go with: Black Panther. He works quite well on the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes cartoon, especially as a foil to the other Avengers, so it’d be great to bring that to the bigscreen.
